| Cornerstone School is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year.
The school was originally founded by a small group of parents seeking
more from education than was being offered. The founding spirit of Cornerstone was a co-operative, community-based school. This remains evident in the high degree of parent participation that is encouraged in the education process. We see ourselves as partners with parents in the education of their children.
The philosophy of the school is one that is non-denominational,
child-centered and strongly based on the education of the whole child in an environment that is safe and supportive. Our behavioral expectations are grounded in the concept of mutual respect. Children are guided, supported, challenged and disciplined accordingly in a manner that is respectful of them.
The school population is small; there are
approximately 200 students from our 3-year-old preschool program
through the 8th grade, and there is one class in each grade
level.
Our curriculum is enriching, challenging and emphasizes problem solving and higher order thinking. Our Middle School curriculum serves
as academically rigorous and designed to support the development
of confident, independent, self-evaluative learners and critical
thinkers. This allows our students to select a High School
program of choice, that includes the various magnet programs
available in the community. We teach in consideration of all learning styles but are not resourced for children who require remedial learning.
The teacher-student ratio is a core aspect of our program,
allowing us to support and challenge the individual student. In
Preschool – 3 year olds and 4 – year old class the ratio is
approximately 1:7, in the Elementary school the ratio is
approximately 1:10 and in the Middle school the ratio is
approximately 1:15.
We are accredited by the
Florida Council of Independent Schools
(FCIS) and the
Florida Kindergarten Council (FKC). According to our accreditation requirements, all of our teachers are qualified within their field.
We are also members of the National Association of Independent
Schools. Information on the advantages of quality
independent education is available on their website at
www.nais.org Our co-curricular program includes Spanish, PE, Music, Art and Ethics.
